Planning a Beach Birthday Party

Now that summer is right around the corner, beaches all over the United States will be dotted with birthday parties for people young and old. If you have a summer birthday and live near an ocean or lake, chances are you’ve had a birthday party at the beach at sometime in the past. If you haven’t and you’d like to do so, here are some tips for making it fun and unique:

Decide what kind of beach party you’ll have
There are themes you can use within a general beach theme that will make your party more interesting. For example, you could have a Surfing USA party, a beach BBQ, a Hawaiian luau or a Caribbean pirate treasure hunt. Or just use your imagination and customize the theme any other way you want. Keep in mind that luaus, which were a big deal in the ’50s and ’60s, are all the rage again for summer 2010. That makes it very simple to buy matching party supplies. Some of those items may even work for all the other types of beach themes because they have a tropical look to them.

Set the right tone with your invitation
Let everyone know the party will be at the beach before they even read the invitation, by using theme-specific beach party invitations. There are plenty of  free general beach party invitations available online that you can print yourself, but you can also do searches for specific sub-themes, such as beach BBQ or luau invitations.

Let there be music
Although you don’t want to blast music all over the beach, some background tunes will definitely help set the mood. Try the Beach Boys or Jan and Dean for Surfing USA or BBQ beach parties and Hawaiian music for a luau. Although it might seem corny, Don Ho made some terrific Hawaiian ukulele music that will really sound authentic. If you can find his albums on CD, they’d be a great addition.

If you get into the spirit, you can probably come up with lots of other touches to make your beach birthday party special. You’re only limited by your imagination. So dust the mothballs off that bathing suit, pull out the beach chairs and have a great time!
